Capital Kiwi by Forest and Bird

Pauline and Margaret (from the Residents’ Association attended a Forest and Bird meeting at Plimmerton.

We learned that 250 brown kiwi from Maungatautiri Sanctuary in the Waikato were released to the Makara area. The reintroduction efforts span an extensive network across the city’s western hills, primarily centered on private farmland and the Mākara/Terawhiti Station area. The project has seen unprecedented success, with a 90% chick survival rate and a wild population conservatively estimated to exceed 300 birds. The birds are increasing their range and have been observed as far north as Titahi Bay.
