Just in from PCC

Good afternoon,

A quick update to let you know that:

Paekakariki Hill Road is CLOSED until around 7pm for tree removal work. Residents who live prior to Battle Hill Farm can access their homes but will have to stop at the Grays Road traffic stop to talk to the traffic control staff.

Grays Road is OPEN but some surface flooding remains. Flooding and caution signs are in place.

Beach Road is currently open for residents only but will be closed again overnight from 8pm for safety reasons. A team will remain on site to monitor it.

Slips have closed SH59 (SH1), Paekakariki Hill Road, Pukerua Beach Road

Large slips today (16 December) have closed BOTH the main road SH59 (SH1 until T Gully opens) north of Pukerua Bay AND the Paekakariki Hill road. Note that the only way north is via SH2 through the Hutt Valley. Please take care and consider delaying your journey.

Slips have ALSO closed Pukerua Beach Road, and PCC engineers are assessing the site.

Wairaka Farm rabbit cull in progress

In the coming week a cull of rabbits will start on Wairaka Farm (Carrad’s farm). The farm has been split into three areas for the cull, as shown in the map. Area 2 is the closest to residences in Pukerua Bay and further advice will come out when shooting in this area will start. Further information from the culler, Hugh Shields, is also included below, including Police notification details and event numbers.

June Penhey passes away

Kua hinga te tōtara i Te Waonui-a-Tāne.

The tōtara tree has fallen in Tāne’s great forest.

With sorrow and with heartfelt gratitude, we mourn the passing of our beloved June.

June was acknowledged for her service to our community last year, when she was granted the Freedom of Pukerua Bay and the previous year, with her well-deserved receipt of a Porirua Civic Award. But these are only tokens. June’s life embodied the spirit of service, care, and faith. Together with husband Mike, she was a “true villager”. She touched our lives in her care for the environment and in the personal care she gave so many people. She demonstrated quiet courage in facing personal tragedy and unwavering fortitude in enduring what has been an extended period of illness.

June will be deeply missed and always remembered. We extend our deepest sympathy to Mike and to all the family.

SH1/Pukerua Beach Road barrier repair Wednesday night

Capital Journeys are repairing the barrier after it was damaged a couple of weeks ago and the work is scheduled for Wednesday night 10 November on State Highway 1 at the Pukerua Beach Road intersection.

There will be stop/go traffic control in place from 7pm to 5.30am. These works should not take all night and the noisiest work will be completed first. Working at night means there are fewer vehicles so the job can be completed quickly, efficiently and safely without causing major traffic delays.

Please be mindful during lambing season

A request from Carrad’s farm, to please keep off the farm during lambing season until December. Walkers and bikers can disturb the sheep which can sometimes result in lambs being abandoned, especially by the younger ewes. This includes all farm access from Rawhiti Road, Kapekape Place, and Raroa Place. Please respect this request; we are allowed access to the private farm at the discretion of the owners.

A message from the Pukerua Bay dairy

Due to illness and the lockdown conditions, opening hours may vary. Most days, the dairy will be open from 9am till 7pm. Please remember to use the COVID-19 Tracer App or sign in. The QR code is on the door. Please wear a mask or bring evidence if there is a medical reason not to wear one.

Community response to the Level 4 lockdown

Pukerua Bay’s 2020 Covid-19 response group has met online to re-establish and discuss suitable local responses to the present Level 4 alert.

  • There is a need to plan for escalation beyond 3 days, which would involve reaching out to volunteers.
  • We have agreed it is best to contact street champions to see if they would be keen to help again, and review of geography may be needed. Note that for privacy reasons, the broader volunteer contact details were deleted as agreed in 2020.
  • Porirua City Council has been in touch with the Pukerua Bay Residents’ Association. Speed has meant they haven’t been able to activate anything yet but if you hear of anybody in immediate urgent need, please let us know so we can alert teams that are still working on site at the Council and at the Wellington Regional Emergency Operations Centre. Any links that we are advised of will be made available.

National Warning: Tsunami Threat

There is a tsunami warning in effect for most of New Zealand following an 8.1 earthquake in the Kermadec Islands region. Please monitor the official Civil Defence sources for more information:

As of 10:30 am today (5 March 2021) People in all New Zealand coastal areas should:

  1. Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates, or check www.civildefence.govt.nz
  2. Listen to local Civil Defence authorities and follow any instructions regarding evacuation of your area
  3. Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, this includes boats)
  4. Stay off beaches and shore areas
  5. Do not go sightseeing
  6. Share this information with family, neighbours and friends

Evacuation advice overrides the current COVID-19 Alert Level requirements. Listen to local Civil Defence authorities and follow any instructions regarding evacuation of your area. If you are told to evacuate do not stay at home. Stay 2 metres away from others if you can and if it is safe to do so.
