July 2022 Residents’ Association meeting minutes

Present: Kate Dreaver, Iain MacLean, Moira Lawler, Nikky Winchester, Mel Galletly, Pauline Morum, Chris Kirk Burnand (GWRC),
Apologies: Paul FitzGerald, Jonathan Harker, Margaret Blair

Council Updates

Porirua City Council: No representative attending.

Greater Wellington City Council

Chris voted against Let’s Get Wellington Moving and has some support from 2 Councillors. Feels it is too expensive. Doesn’t offer much to people outside of the Wellington city area. Will impinge on our ability to fund rail improvements up the Kapiti coast. The actual spend of GWRC on the environment is falling over 10 years. Need to focus on that.

Feeling that GWRC has little focus on Pukerua Bay, particularly in public transport improvements. Rail system falling behind and connection to airport really needed.

Approval of previous minutes

Motion: moved Moira, seconded Mel – approved.

Matters arising from previous minutes

Updating the Constitution – actually doesn’t need to be done until November 2023. Nikky has offered to help as she has some experience.

Fridge magnets – Jonathan did a design but it probably needs to be simplified. Kate will forward feedback to Jon to make changes.

We received an email from Maryon Wils – Meridian and PCC are looking at JV to roll out EV chargers in Wellington. Meridian has had people away with flu but are testing the loading capacity of the power poles. Looking at by the letter box by the shops and in front of the motorcycle shop. Mel will report back.

PCC invited us to community engagement sessions on the proposed extension of Spice Landfill.

Invitation from Talanoa-Wananga to the climate change workshop hosted by Ngāti Toa.

Executive Committee Handbook

Nikky has sent through some draft documents – A Committee Induction Handbook, a draft Committee Handbook, and an IT Policy for review. Feedback to go to Nikky.

He Ara Pukerua

Facebook: Matariki – Storage of Huakaroro potatoes at Pukerua in 1906 reached 9245 people; The Battle of the Rocks reached 7053 people. Currently researching story of Muri Station to mark opening 70 years ago on 28 July 1952.

Panels: Waiting for Maori version for Pou panel. Draft of three panels back from designer.

Research: Stories of Gray and Ames families ongoing.

Management: He Ara helped with setting up, baking and on the night for the Hub’s Matariki celebration. He Ara Pukerua is a Porirua finalist for the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards.

Kōrero

We’ve begun to plan the September issue. It will continue with long-term thinking about urban planning and sustainability, with a focus on local businesses. It will include an item from Margaret and He Ara – the positive response to their item on storage of Huakaroro potatoes reflects the degree of interest in this topic.

We are planning to put in another grants application to supplement what we get from advertising.

Motion: that the PKBRA support an application to the Hutt Mana Community Trust for the Korero newsletter for $2,000 for printing and production costs. Moved Kate, seconded Mel – approved.

Village Plan Review

As reported by Euon last month, the future of the Programme as a whole is suspended till the new Council comes in. Still need to turn our material into a finished plan.

Waste Free PKB

Plastic free July is on. For July the Warehouse is collecting broken plastic toys for recycling. Chemist Warehouse is now collecting all types of makeup packaging. Chips Aotearoa are collecting Chip packets (clean/washed). Bunnings recycling batteries. Mitre 10 is running an exchange of plant pots.

Community Hub

Very successful Matariki night. A lost light has left the group fundraising for a stolen light.
