About Pukerua Bay

Pukerua Bay School

Since its beginning in 1927, with 27 pupils, the school has been the focal point of the community, and benefits greatly from high levels of positive parental and community involvement and support. Pukerua Bay School is a full primary school catering for the needs of children from Year 1 to Year 8. The roll varies between around 150 - 175 pupils. The school has a family atmosphere and with the majority of children coming from within Pukerua Bay community; close relationships with families are fostered and encouraged.

We have a very talented teaching team with breadth of experience and success in delivering programmes of learning across the New Zealand curriculum.

The school grounds are spacious and attractive, including mosaic displays, shade areas, bush and tree areas, lunch seating, playing fields, a cricket wicket, sealed netball courts, sun-safe senior school courtyard area, two adventure playgrounds, two sheltered sandpits, sealed play areas and equipment for children of different ages.


The main entrance to the school is located on Rawhiti Road, there is also and eastern pedestrian access to the footbridge crossing SH1 for pupils living on the eastern side of the Bay and for those who travel by train.

A weekly school newsletter is sent home to all families three Fridays a month. This newsletter covers interesting and relevant information on the latest school activities and future events, and is the main method of communication between school and home.

The school has a library to support its curriculum programmes. There is also Information Technology, Technicraft for Year 7/8 at the Plimmerton Technology Centre. An annual aquatics programme is also part of the school's physical education programme.

After-school Care

After-school care is provided every afternoon after school from 3.00 pm - 6.00 pm. Homework space is given and there are weekly activities such as crafts, including pottery, etc. to keep the children occupied. Afternoon tea is also provided.

Secondary Schools

Many students continue on from Pukerua Bay School to either Kapiti College in Raumati, or Aotea College in Porirua, for which Pukerua Bay is zoned.
